another wonderful run in 10 degree weather. Just trying to stay warm saps out all your energy and desire to live!
31 days till the Surf City Marathon in sunny california. |
| |
| | Oh my, it was only 7 degrees this am. I waited till it was 17 to go out and get my run in. |
| |
cut my planned 22 miler short to 14 because of the awful cold and polluted air in the valley. I just felt totally drained trying to keep warm, more like not being able to get warm or maintain a constant body heat especially to the extremities. Oh well I'll pick up the mileage tomorrow as the weather gypsies say the Salt Lake valley is supposed to get up to balmy mid-summer like 31 degrees. Oh boy, yippee, I can hardly wait. |
| |
| | the temp was up to 30 for my pm easy 5 mi run.........but the air was thick and smelly! |
| |
| | 10 miles tonight in the hills. I think this is one of my last hill repeat drills till SC/USA. Nice run in +40 degree no wind environment. |
| |

|
| | 11 days till SC/USA.............. 6 mile run in the15 degree dark of night | |
| | 4 miles in 25 degree weather......great taper stuff. Thought I'd just add this: Picture this..."a start wreathed in light fog, led out by a covey of restored classic woody sedans and lifeguard vehicles," complete with surfboards on top! Marathon & Beyond Magazine calls it a "perfect start/finish." All races begin to the Beach Boys' soundtrack Surfin' USA and the cheers of local surfers from Huntington Beach's own surfing clubs. This exclusive oceanfront course is a classic California Dream! Run by the famous Huntington Beach pier and through scenic Huntington Central Park. The beachfront running path winds through the famed surfing beaches of Southern California. Retro surf bands entertain along the way and the Finish Line Festival includes a beach side beer garden and BBQ in the California sun. Finishers receive bodacious surfboard medals. Surf City, Here We Run! Hey Ronnie, Mindy and Marcie, are you ready to rumble........? | |
| | what a running day. Got up late in the morning and when I got around to getting out the door it started raining along with the 30 to 40 mph gusting winds. So I waited about an hour watching the weather and was lucky enough to find a sucker hole in the clouds. I waited and was rewarded with a period of time without any rain or snow......although the winds continued.......Oh well I got in my 8 miles out and back up and down the Sandy hills. 7 days till the Surf City USA Marathon..... |
| |
| | 142 hours till the SC/USA begins. | |
| | 4.5 easy taper miles. The carb load is underway!I got a conformation for our Super Bowl party at the Waterfront Hilton. Man this marathon really knows how to set up for my birthday party. Bless their hearts!!! |

Surf City USA (26.2 Miles) 03:57:47, Place overall: 9, Place in age division: 8 | | I really love running this marathon. The Surf City USA race Directors have their stuff together. This is my second time to run this marathon and I'm duelly impressed. From the Expo, to the baggage check, to beer tent at the end, this race went like a finely tuned watch. The California laid back lifestyle attitude is alive and well at Surf City. This years Surf City USA Marathon and half marathon drew in about 20,000 runners with about 2400 runners choosing to run the marathon and the bulk of the runners doing the half. The starting temprature was at @ 53 degrees with a slight breeze flowing off the ocean inland, which made the start very comfortable. The "Woodies" lead the way to start the race to the Beach Boys song, Surf City USA...it was great! I chose to start my race at about 8 minute miles and held that pace till about 13 to 15 miles out. Then I got a bit distracted and my page got a little higher.I probably should have started a bit slower, but it felt just right and I got to start my race running with Mindy, Marcie and Ronnie. Oh well, I had a great time and it was one of those no pressure races where you don't have to prove anything to anybody. I continued my race to finish with a 3:57:47 finish time. I had planned on going a bit faster but thats not what happened. I ended up 8th place in my old man division and 609th overall in the marathon. By the end of the race the temps were up to around 70 to 75 degrees, and I was surely enjoying it. After finishing the race I met up with Hillbilly Runner and we took a time out in the beer tent, had a few beers, met a few new runners and then we left and got ready for a Superbowl party at the Waterfront Hilton Hotel. What a day, what a weekend, whatta great marathon. TYI......... |

The Layton Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:50:00, Place overall: 18, Place in age division: 1 | | Not much to say about this race except that I really wanted to BQ. I want to return to Boston at least one more time to thumb my nose up at all the terrorists in the world that would bomb people running in the street and their familys watching them. What a bunch of #@&*#@ cowards!
I did BQ with a 3:50:00 even run at the Layton Marathon. This was a very small group of runners that were bussed out to Antelope Island, my guess is that there were less than 60 marathoners at the starting line. It seems that most of the entrants into this days races were the 1/2 marathon and the 10K rather than the marathon. It was pitch black out there on the island when the organizers turned off the temporary lighting. You could see the star light shimmering on the water as well as the lighting from the residences of Syracuse and the communities lining the areas adjacent to the lake. It was a beautiful sight.
The race got underway at about 6:00 am with little or no fanfare. I tried to get as close to the front of the small group of runners as possible.
For me the race was on, I had put much hope and hard work into this race so as to be ready to run for my life, I just wanted to get my tired old bod from point A to point B and run a BQ time. The first miles were pretty much roily poly hills until you got to about 6 where you ran the toughest hill on the course, which wasn't really that bad. It seemed like that over about a two mile distance the hill rose about 200 hundred feet in elevation and then dropped gently back down into the 4250 foot area of elevation. While on the Island I saw probably about a hundred head of buffalo that actually stampeded over the road behind me in the race. The island portion of the race was about 10 miles long then we were on the causeway for about 7 miles with the lake or the dried up lake on either side.
After leaving the causeway you were then running in farm land and sparse residential areas all the way back to the finish line at a park between a couple of area schools.
Somewhere out about 7 miles my Garmin let me know that it had filled up all the available space for lap times and all it was good for was telling me my current lap pace and my overall time on the road. It was quite disappointing to lose all my lap/mile pace times to a full Garmin. Oh well, I just did the math in my head and keep pushing my big feet out in front and made my way to the end.
About the time that I was leaving the causeway at about mile 17 the sun was up and getting hot as we all ran towards the east directly into the new days sun. This is where I caught up with a kid that I sat near on the bus out to the island. This was his first race and he was ready to take names and kick butt to the finish. He seemed to be having some cramping problems with his legs when I finally passed him. As I went by I did offer some advise on how to work out the cramps and encouraged him to keep the faith and keep on running as we were at about the last 10k of this race.
I was losing steam and the 3:45:00 pace team leader, who was all by herself, passed me. I tried to stay with her but that didn't seem to happen for me. I did keep her in sight and judged my speed and finish time by her pace. As I worked my way to the finish line I started to pass a lot of other runners that were walking the course road, I thought it was rather strange to see so many walkers. It turned out that they were 1/2 marathoners making their way to the finish line the best that they could. It was really getting hot out there on this course with very little or no shade to escape the rising sun and the heat of the course to the finish line.
As I rounded the last turn on the course and headed into the final 700 yards of two lane black top to the finish line I felt very relieved with a great welling of emotion and pride inside that I would be finishing this marathon with a BQ time. It wasn't the faster time that I was running for, but the 15 minute slower time that it took me to get there at 3:50:00. I couldn't believe that I had done it in an even 230 minutes on the dot.
Just as I finished a very good friend was there to cheer and congratulate me for my finish and shortly after that, the young man that I had ridden the bus to the start finished his race. He approached me and thanked me for all the advise that I had imparted to him on the bus, at the starting line and on the race course. He stated that this was his first marathon ever and he had taken 1st place in his Age Division (20-24), proudly displaying his medals to me and then giving me the biggest, sweatiest hug ever! I reminded this young man that he had been "Geezered" in this race by little 'ol me ! It was worth a great laugh by both of us!
It was a fine day, I took 1st place in my old mans Age Division (60-64) and 18th overall for the marathon. TYI......
|
| |
| | Hot and humid here in Utah......I got out for a 2.62 mile recovery jog this am. Man, that was like sweating bullits but I got all the parts to work and play well together. I wonder what I will do next?

Beat the Clock 5K (3.1 Miles) 00:20:43 | | am 6 mi training run in the smog and partly cloudy gunk filled air. Then tonight at 11:30p I'll do the New Years Eve Beat the Clock 5k at Sugar House Park.............Chow Boing!
This 5k was my 8th time to attend in the last 8 years straight. The ambient temp was 30 degrees. The race started pretty much on time and was well attended with about 275 runners. There was a slight breeze but it really made little or no difference in this hilly fun run. I got a fairly good start and stuck with my 5k running plan....start fast in the first mile, get faster in the second mile and in the third mile let whatever you've got left go and get your butt to the finish line......
Life is whats happening, when you are making other plans.
