Race: Run Elevated Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:49:54, Place overall: 8, Place in age division: 1

I really enjoyed running the run elevated half marathon.  It was kind a like running my regular workout training runs in my own neighborhood.  Actually part of the course for the half marathon was on the Dimple Dell and in the area of a little cottonwood where I do run.  The half marathon started at Alta ski resort and then ran down Little Cottonwood Canyon and it ended up at the Alta Canyon sports center. I took on this half marathon is a training run for me as I'm getting ready for the CIM marathon in Sacramento California and I also help train a guy that want to run his first half marathon.

The marathon started at 6:30 AM and it was 39° at the top of the mountain,  which started right on time. I started the race thinking that I would just have a nice easy training run, but once I got going I felt pretty good about myself, my training thus far and the recovery I've made in my total body health, I decided to open up and make this 1/2 marathon more of a competitive situation. I ran the first three miles of the race with "Troy" telling him that he should take it easy for his very first 1/2 marathon, and his longest distance he's ever run before. So at the three mile mark I started running my own race to the finish line. The race began at the elevation of 8760' and dropped 3800' to the finish line at the Alta Sports Center in Sandy, which is the City I live in. I guess I could have just run home after I finished the race!

The percentage of grade on the road was pretty wicked on the down hill with really only one small section of super difficult up hill running that was on the top of the "DDMR", Dimple Dell Mountain Road, that's what I call Dimple Dell Road, where I usually train. Anyway, this section is at about 10 miles into the race and a whole lot of down the mountain side running. The rest of the race was still down hill racing except right at finish like when it was kinda flat in the sports center parking lot.

I managed to keep up a pretty steady pace of about 8 minute miles and finish in 109 minutes, so that turned out to be about 8:23 minutes per mile. This was good enough to net me a First place medal in my old man age division (65-69) and an overall place of 68th.  My friend "Troy" came in at 2 hours and a minute and was very happy with his first 1/2 marathon. He was really excited when he found out he took 2nd place in his age division!!!  The direction and orginazation of this 1/2 Mary was very good. Everything was where it was supposed to be when it was supposed to be there. I'd consider doing this 1/2 again sometime, for now it's time to get ready for CIM in December in California.
