The Lost Dutchman Marathon

Yesterday , Sunday the 19th, I ran the Dutchman in what I thought was almost perfect weather conditions. At the starting line it was about 49 degrees with a cloud covered sunrise. The sun lit up the Superstition Mountains like only a sunrise or sunset in Arizona can happen.

The organization of the Dutchman, which was voted one of the best 12 small marathons in the country, was really second to none. It may have been a small marathon but it went off without a hitch. All the way from the smallish expo to parking at the Rodeo Grounds to the shuttle bus ride to the starting and back to the Rodeo Grounds parking. The course was well marked and the aid station volunteers were all there and in super spirits exhorting the runners on to the finish.

The race started right at 7:am and we were all headed down a very well maintained dirt road through some of the most scenic desert landscape you can imagine for the first 7 miles. Then the rest of the race was pretty much black top paved highways and residential running on rolly polly washboard roads.

So right from the get go at the starting line I made the fatal mistake of thinking that I was feeling as good physically as I was mentally just coming off the Surf City USA Marathon just two weeks ago and started out too quickly. I shouldn't have tossed my real race plan to the wind. Oh well......

Out about mile 16.5 to mile 20 the course reminded me of Heart Break Hill at Boston. These hills weren't terribly tall but their placement on the course wore at you just like Heart Break does. This seems to be where I got a bit tired and my past marathons of the last 12 months caught up with me....I pretty much ran out of high test gas and coasted to the finish on fumes.

At the end of the race as I was stumbling into the finish chute out of nowhere there appeared Ms. Julie Ann "BeMo" who jumped on the course and immediately began to encourage me to speed it up as she encouraged me by running by my side to the finish line. That was a beautiful gesture but I really could have used your super enthusiasm out at the 20 mile mark when I really started slowing down. After the finish I got to meet and greet with Julie Ann and her man Darrell for a little while. Hey Julie Ann, thanks for being there, It was great to see a friendly face at the end of a tough marathon. I'll return the favor at your upcoming Ogden Marathon....see you at the finish

I managed to finish this super marathon in 4 hours and 5 seconds......That was good for an overall finish at 175th out of 530 marathon finishers and a 7th place finish in my male 60-64 AG. And just for fun I got a 3:13:52 Age Graded time. Now its time to focus in on getting ready for the "Boston Marathon" in 8 big wonderful weeks.

Sometime in the near future I will run this marathon again..................It's worth it!

Great report and another fine race!! Rest up and get ready to strut your stuff at Boston.

From RAD on Mon, Feb 20, 2012 at 13:38:19 from 98.202.23.178

This is so seriously amazing Slick! You did it and in good form and you pushed through some of these races with nagging injures. Happy Birthday! Keep at it - there is no such thing as a 'normal' life for us crazies :)

From Russ on Mon, Feb 20, 2012 at 13:38:21 from 74.114.3.253

Congrats on finishing your 12/12/60 challenge! That's fantastic.

From Jon on Mon, Feb 20, 2012 at 19:22:55 from 74.177.120.222

That's an impressive list of races you ran. Enjoy the break.

From Tom Slick on Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 08:48:53 from 69.171.160.146

Hillbilly Runner - Thanks, I'll grab a few days of rest then get the show on the road. It's less than 8 weeks till we run the Boston and I need a lot of attention to get this tired old man body ready for the Killer Chain and Heart Break Hill...

RAD - Thanks for the kind thoughts, especially the one where you tell me that "crazy" is the new normal and we haven't got a ghost of a chance at recovery from this affliction!

RUSS - Thanks for noticing my personal 12/12/60 challenge, I realize that a lot of other much more talented runners have done this before, but this was my "personal challenge", and I’m glad it's finished...

Jon - I will enjoy the break and thanks for the atta-boy. Coming from a guy with a running record like yours makes me feel really good! Thanks!

From Jake K on Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 09:05:27 from 155.100.226.54

That's a great accomplishment, Tom. What's really cool is that you ran 2 of your faster times at the END of the 12 race journey - most people would have been completely broken by that point! :-)

Now take some R&R and get the body ready for Boston. A whole month without a marathon - what are you going to do?!?

From Tom Slick on Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 10:05:38 from 69.171.160.146

Jake K - Thanks for the great complement! It was a tough personal challenge and I'm really glad to have it completed. Now I have to set my sights on running as fast as you! Fat chance that will ever happen! Thanks!

From MarcE on Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 10:31:44 from 204.16.82.120

Sounds like a fun one. I haven't run one in AZ, yet...maybe next year. Congrats on the 12 marathons in 12 months - that's an amazing feat! (especially at your age ;)

8 weeks will feel like an eternity compared to the short time between your recent marathons. I see a Boston PR in your near future!

From Tom Slick on Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 11:28:28 from 69.171.160.146

Marc - Thanks. It's but 54 days till the Boston and I hope that I can get rested and into good enough shape to compete with myself for a PR/BQ at Boston. The last 12 months have been really hard on this tired, old, fat man!

From Smooth on Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 17:17:39 from 174.27.219.252

AWESOME report!!! GOOD JOB on your 12th marathon in 12 months!!! CONGRATZ on meeting your 60th birthday goal! VERY AMAZING accomplishment!!!

I am sure you will rock Boston...you DA MAN!!!! :)
