The Cowtown:

This was my first venture into the Great State of Texas marathoning and I did so at the behest of my very good friend and his family, Marc! So I will start off with thanking Marc and his family for their more than generous hospitality for my stay with them.

I felt rather prepared to do the Cowtown with lots of prior training. I flew into Ft. Worth on Friday and Marc picked me up and showed me the sights. We went on into expo and picked up our race packets and got to meet and greet lots of fellow runners and friends of Marc. I just happened to know one of the volunteer race Directors who managed to sheppard us around. He took us past the lines to get our bib numbers and later on handed us our finisher medals at the finish line. All and all the Cowtown Marathon was a really first class production.

We got to the Will Rogers Arena at about 5:20 am on race morning, the 27th and went to find Marc's Pace group meeting and were pleasantly surprised to be part of a Sunday morning "Runners" church service. What was really neat was that the runners could wait for the race to begin inside the Will Rogers arena, with lots of bathrooms and such. Shortly after the service we went outside to the starting corrals where I hung around with Marc and got to know a lot of his running friends and his pace group. It seemed like he had a beginning group of about 45 members of the pace group.

The Star Spangled Banner played and a few announcements played and the race was off in a two corral start.

The race was new to me this year even though Marc had driven me around the entire course, at least I had a really good feel of what and where the course was going.

The race started pretty much on time with full marathoners and half marathoners mixed together. The wind was so hard at the first that the US and Texas flags were fully displayed and snapping in the wind! That was the last time the wind was at our backs till the 19th mile of the race. At mile 19 we turned the bend and headed back to the start/finish area with the same wind, only at our backs. Sure was nice to have a boost at the end of the race.

Oh well, For most of the race I tucked in behind Marc and his pace group and did as much drafting through the wind as possible and I think I saved up enough energy to finish the race in a pretty strong fashion. Out on the course there was great crowd and fan support, it seemed like every body had set up their own water stops for the runners. The Cowtown Marathon people had done a great job of getting their own aid and water stops out in the right places with lots of volunteers. And the support from the "TCU" community was fabulous.

I thought that I ran a pretty steady race with an overall time of 3:44:19. My best mile was at 7:09 and my fastest recorded time was 5:31 with my average pace being at 8:33 per mile. This was all good enough for a 135th place overall and a second place in my 60 - 64 year old mans Age Group and a BQ. Some old guy beat me out of first place by about 4 minutes, I think.

This would give me  a 3:02:55 Age Graded time!!!

Anyway it was a great marathoning weekend with  family and friends in Texas. Thanks Marc, I can't wait to return the favor in the future!!!!

Great race in that Texas wind, and congrats on the strong AG placing. Sounds like it was fun.

Slow.Joe-It was a great race and I want to go and do it again.

Right on!!! Sounds like you all had a great time. Very nice of Marc to take you in and show you the sights. Congrats on 2nd place AG.

Great marathon! Congratulations on a well run race.

From Tom Slick on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 15:56:38 from 69.171.160.125

JD-Thanks for the atta boy! I'm guessing that I will have to continue running,

"Beat George W. Bush in the marathon (he ran a 3:44:52 in 1993). If I can't do this, then I'll give up running,

cause like your statement,I just barley beat "George W Bush's marathon time by 33 seconds!

Which marathon did he run in 1993?

From JD on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 16:07:16 from 70.96.78.149

Haha! It was the Houston marathon I think. Good job beating George W! He was only 47 or 48 yrs old probably so you've really put him to shame.

From Teena Marie on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 18:08:47 from 67.2.126.2

WOW!!!! What an amazing race and experience.

Seriously, you are so fit!!! Running that pace into the wind (most of the time) and finishing in such style is AWESOME!!!!

Congrats on the 2nd place, the fantastic time, and the barely over 3 hour mark age-graded time. You're a stud!

From RAD on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 19:26:19 from 67.172.229.125

What an incredible race, especially for the conditions. All that winter road running has proven itself more than effective for you! I'm still a pansy and probably would've whined about the wind a lot more.

From allie on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 19:35:58 from 174.23.253.123

congrats! you ran an awesome race and it sounds like it was a fun experience. great work.

From flatlander on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 22:37:42 from 76.31.26.153

Tom, thanks for coming to Texas to run. I am curious about something -- Did you feel like you got a big boost coming down in elevation or not so much? I know I suffer when I go up, but not sure I see the same thing in reverse.

From MarcE on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 22:57:15 from 204.16.82.120

Tom Slick, you had a great run! You're welcome to come back anytime. El Scorcho 50K is in July, there's another marathon in November, and White Rock is in December...and if I don't retire from marathoning, I might join you at one of them.:)

From Tom Slick on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 23:38:14 from 69.171.160.166

Allie-It was a great race experience and I do hope to do it again soon. I think I can really do better!

From Tom Slick on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 23:41:31 from 69.171.160.166

Flatlander- Texas is great and so was the marathon. The Altitude was absolutely no problem. Coming from altitude made it oxygen overload for me. My problem was the humidity. I couldn't believe how much I was sweating, buckets and buckets, I was wet from start to finish.

From Tom Slick on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 23:49:13 from 69.171.160.166

Oh Brother Marc, whats this talk of retiring from the big run? If I gave it up every time I had a bad day I would have been finished a long time ago! Oh my hell, if it hadn't been for you I wouldn't have even finished this marathon and I wouldn't have done so well with out all the help you gave me thorough the entire course of this brutal marathon.....

And thanks for the invite to come back, I think I want to toss White Rocks into the hat in December!!!! What do you think, do you think you can come pace this old man through another marathon???

Just fast enough to get a 1st place in the old mans division???

From Smooth on Tue, Mar 01, 2011 at 16:59:30 from 67.2.86.179

I am late at reading your report! WOW!!!! What an awesome race!

You never cease to impress! That sounds like a brutal condition, humidity and headwind! What a great performance!

WAY to show the old men how it's done!

So proud of you! This is your year, Coach! :)
