I have no race report because as you know they cancelled the entire race. Can't believe they waited till almost everybody that was registered for this race was already in NYC before the reversed their decision and cancelled the NYC Mary. I am totally pissed off and have nothing good to say about the NYC marathon and I can't wait to join in on a Class Action Suit against them!!!!!!

Social Media/Controversy Cancels the NYC Marathon
It was a tragedy - and we don't mean "SuperStorm" Sandy, we mean that politics and Social Media caused the cancellation of the 2012 New York City Marathon. We live in New York and can report - as the mayor's office stated in their cancellation statement - that holding the NYC Marathon would have caused no hardship to the storm cleanup efforts. Somehow, however, the decision to cancel was made without concern for the damage to numerous businesses, athletes, city revenue, individuals and the sport - ouch. While, with no "controversy," Times Square was lit up and using enough energy to power any small city in the nation, while tourists were visiting Broadway shows and while New York sports teams were playing their contests, the Marathon was canceled - why pick on the runners and the one activity promoting health? The immediate and long-ranging damage to running may be incalculable:

  • we visited the marathon expo where many small running-related businesses rely on sales to power their year. The photo vendors and the small companies that provide the keepsake souvenir boxes will see no revenue to offset their costs and some may not survive. Similarly, dozens of other running-related companies that we love saw meager expo sales and will now suffer if they can continue.
  • many had already arrived to New York, but many more canceled or shortened their trips. We estimate 30,000 hotel nights were lost - why do something to hurt the hotels and lose city tax revenue when it is needed?
  • the professional athletes who had put their eggs in the basket of the NYC Marathon and expected prize money to support their continued ability to live as professional athletes and inspire the rest of us will be suffering, some may be forced to curtail their training as they seek other ways to make money.
  • other local businesses that rely on marathon day were hurt. I stopped in my local bagel restaurant (a tough business) on West 72 St. and it was fairly empty. In the past they have relied on the finisher and spectator traffic on Marathon day as their busiest day of the year, now lost.
  • the New York Road Runners, a non-profit that does much to support youth running and professional running programs, will have lost significant funds that will no longer be available to support running - the ripple effects will be great. Ouch...
In all, canceling the marathon helped no one and hurt many. With the negative effect on running businesses, professional athletes and even the New York economy; MarathonGuide.com's position is that this was one of the worst political decisions ever. While most of the 40,000 marathoners who were forced to give up their day of a marathon will get over this blip, the effect on the business and professionals who relied on this event is larger than most might realize and we expect there may be long-ranging effects.

New York City Marathon Canceled - The Official Statement
Joint statement from Mayor Bloomberg and NYRR President and CEO Mary Wittenberg:
"The Marathon has been an integral part of New York City's life for 40 years and is an event tens of thousands of New Yorkers participate in and millions more watch. While holding the race would not require diverting resources from the recovery effort, it is clear that it has become the source of controversy and division. The marathon has always brought our city together and inspired us with stories of courage and determination. We would not want a cloud to hang over the race or its participants, and so we have decided to cancel it. We cannot allow a controversy over an athletic event -- even one as meaningful as this -- to distract attention away from all the critically important work that is being done to recover from the storm and get our city back on track. The New York Road Runners will have additional information in the days ahead for participants."
[editors note: while this was a "joint statement," we're pretty certain the decision came down from the mayor's office. The statement clearly states there was no rational reason to cancel the marathon, but rather "controversy...division...and...a cloud" caused the cancellation. The NYRR tried to offset this controversy by donating $1million and finding another $1.5million to donate, but even with that $2.5mm++ support, it was not enough to change sentiment... And while other professional sports events went on and most of NYC and Times Square hummed along; the marathon was made a scape goat and canceled.]

  • I will never consider returning to NYC to run their marathon. Not even for a visit!
