It was a pretty good to run the Des News Marathon 10k. I'm helping Troy train for the St George Marathon (October 6, 2018) and included in the training program I have scheduled in 4 races including 2 - 5ks, 1 - 10K, a 1/2 Marathon and then the St George Marathon... Today we did the 10K where we practiced running a well controlled start and a gradual increase in speed until we were at a comfortable pace for Troy. There was a 10k field of about 1042 runners entered into the 10k this fine day. Starting temperature was 70* at 6:00am,  it was a semi dark start with a very little breeze at about 5 mph and humidity at 26% .

I promised Troy I would run step for step with him though out the race and coach him along noting posture, stride & foot strike, breathing, and over all good race form & focus!

The race went very well and our race strategie was spot on for Troy and myself for that matter. As we rounded the last corner and were about 6 large city blocks ( about 1 mile) and could see the banner over the finish line, we were still running shoulder to shoulder. Then at about 75 yards to the finish, Troy attempted to "Snake" the race away and pulled ahead of me! As I noticed him make his break away I answered the bell and kicked in a faster gear and passed him and beat him over the finish line. I played nice and only beat him by couple of steps. Like I said, it was a really fun 10k.

This 10K is run on a State Of Utah Holiday known as  Pioneer Day / The days of 1847! This is when the Pioneers entered the Salt Lake City Utah valley. During the last 2 miles of the race you get to run down the parade route with all the cheering parade and runners fans.....pretty fun!

I ended this race with the following stats;

Time: 52:23

AG Pos;  3rd out of 20 (M65 - 69)

Gender Place; 199 of 497

Overall Finish Position; 294 of 1042

Pace; 8:27/M

Now we've got 20 days until our next race which will be Porter's Half Marathon which runs from the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon down my favorite run on the Dimple Dell Mt Rd., dam near right past my home on the way to the finish line in the Draper City park. This will be running on my home turf, I know the course like the back of my hand and were gunna have a really great race.......

a damn fine run man - Troy's pretty lucky to get specific input like that from an experienced runner - sounds like a great race for you today!

Allie, This race is always a fun one. I'll bet you remember the day when you were the outright winner of the marathon (f).

JD - Troy's a really good friend of mine and I've truly enjoyed coaching him to reach his dreams...He wants to get a BQ and go to Boston!!!!

Allie, ya the humidity was a little high here for living in a high desert, but it goes away....unlike how Seattle just stays so so humid all the time. Buts that's how it is in the Emerald City! So tell me, is the humidity worse in Atlanta or Seattle?

From Tom Slick on Wed, Jul 25, 2018 at 14:33:19 from 174.148.49.93

Yes I know that I could have cut about 10 minutes off my time if I had not run with Troy, but a promise is a promise and I'm quite pleased with the outcome for both Troy and myself....After running the Des News 10k 9 times, this run was the first time I broke into the top 3 of my AG and it was done on a day that I wasn't even thinking about my personal outcome in the race.

You sound like an amazing coach. You want to come pace me at my next race? :)

Did you get some hardware for that 3rd place AG finish?

I was just telling Doone yesterday that I need to start taking Pioneer Day off even though I live in AZ.

Slick--

Got your msg, but not sure how to send you one other than posting here. Yes, I'm still in the game. Kind of. Saw your name on the board at the DesNews 10K (I finished 1st in our AG). I haven't been on here in ages, and quite frankly had forgotten all about this blog. Wish I'd seen you on the 24th. Would have been great to catch up with you. FYI, I'm not running SGM this year. I am running the TOU HM, the TOU Marathon Relay, the Mt Lemon HM in Tucson in November, and various other 5 & 10K's in the area. Hope to see you on the road somewhere! --Pron8r
