This was kind of a new experience for me. I ran the Beat the New Year 5K at Sugarhouse Park last night to end my 2010 running season and 10 hours later I ran the Draper, Utah 2011 New Years Day 5K to kick off and start my 2011 running season odyssey.

I dragged my tired old man butt out of bed and got to the park at about 8:30 am and promptly registered for this races 1st annual. The really cold guy behind the registration table told me that there were about 250 runners signed up for the race ranging from 12 years old to 74. With a little bit of prodding I found out there were only two other old farts in my age division signed up.......Wow, I said to myself, I get no less than 3rd place just for showing up!!!

I grabbed my bib and stuff and quickly drove home and waited there in the comfort of my heated home for the proper time to return to the race site. I drove back to the park at about 9:45a and promptly got out and did a mile or so and got the old bones and joints warmed up. I then worked my way to as close to the front of the pack as possible but met with a lot of resistance from a lot of the (slower) fun runner crowd that had beat me at my own game.

So the race started pretty much on time, 10:a, and I had to duck and bob and weave through about 50 people before I could get into some clean running space. What was really neat about this race is, it was held on the Porter Rockwell Trail, one of my favorite training trails. The course was an out and back and I knew it all too well.

When I broke out in to the open running I quickly passed a bunch of pretty good runners as I worked my way into sight of the leaders. At the turn around point I counted the runners coming back and found that I was in 13th place overall at the time, and none of them looked like they were anywhere close to my old man age and division. So from the turn around point to the finish I knew that the trail was aided in the runners favor and I could increase my speed to the finish. Which I think I did.

Oh by the way, at the start of the race it was 10 degrees.

So I started my return to the finish line by increasing my speed. I even managed to pass three more runners on the way back and I stepped over the finish line with a 22:33.2 time for the 5K, some 8 seconds slower than the 5K the evening before. A 7.15 min. mile average. According to my garmin my top speed of the run was at 5.2 min per mile. An effort that garnered me a 1st place blue ribbon in my age division.

The overall all winner was "Craig Green" with a time of 17:25 something! I had a really great time running this 5k and the other one just 10 hours before.

Happy New Year you all..................

Excellent race! Two very consistent times back to back shows what you're made of. Especially in this freezing cold! Looks like the year is starting out right.
